Rodin in My Backyard was an 8-week sculpture workshop where adult students learned about basic mold making and created their own casts. Together we had explored and finished 3 projects including plaster stamps, 2-part mold making, and making alginate molds from our own hands.
Step by step, we were acquiring the concept of mold making, its general processes, and how it can be applied to our everyday lives and also personal artistic creations. With the emphasis on hand-on practice, we learned how to prepare and shape clay, how to create 1-part or 2-part molds, how to mix and pour plaster into molds, and how to de-mold and present final casts. Through touching, modeling, and sculpting, we experienced sensational interactions with different materials, such as oil clay, casting plaster, and alginate, and learned how to handle their different features.
The process of art appreciation, hand-on practice, and group presentation also provided us an initial understanding on sculpture and art making.
