The second Session of the Printmaking Workshop “Linocut Enthusiasts”, was held on a rainy day.
We had a small group of very enthusiastic participants ready to learn the nuts and bolts of Linocut.
Our instructor started the class by summarizing and stating again the exercises made during our first session. We talked about “Mark Making”. Afterwards, Michelle did an Introduction about how importance of Safety regarding the tools used for Linocut and Printmaking in general.
She explained to us that the Lino cutters are called Gouges. They are very sharp and can cut our fingers if we do not use them properly.
ALWAYS CARVE WITH THE HAND THAT “HOLDS THE LINOLEUM PLATE”, BEHIND THE CARVING HAND!!!
MOST PEOPLE CARVE WITH THEIR DOMINANT HAND AND HOLD THE PLATE WITH THEIR NON-DOMINANT HAND.

We also learned about safety tips when using the Printing Press. Our Instructor will review those when we get to use the press.
In the second part of the class, We finally got to work with the linoleum plate and the cutters. We made marks on the plate using the gouges. It takes practice and patience.
We traced a grid on the plate and drew lines (like we did in the first session). Then we started carving. We all did very well.
Michelle also told us that if we use a “Bench Hook”, it is easier to hold the plate. We had only 2 bench hooks but we shared.

En un día lluvioso se llevó a cabo la segunda Sesión del Taller de Grabado “Entusiastas del Linóleo”. Tuvimos un grupo pequeño listo para aprender los aspectos prácticos del Linóleo.
Nuestra instructora comenzó la clase mencionando los ejercicios realizados durante nuestra primera sesión. Hablamos de “Hacer marcas”. Luego Michelle hizo una Introducción sobre lo importante que es la seguridad cuando usamos herramientas de Linóleo y de Grabado en general.
Nos explicó que las herramientas para tallar el linóleo se llaman Gubias y son muy afiladas. Si no las usamos con cuidado podemos lastimarnos los dedos.
¡¡¡SIEMPRE TALLE CON LA MANO QUE “SOSTIENE LA PLACA DE LINOLEO” DETRÁS DE LA MANO QUE TALLA!!!
LA MAYORIA DE LAS PERSONAS TALLAN CON SU MANO DOMINANTE Y SOSTIENEN LA PLACA CON SU MANO NO DOMINANTE.

También aprendimos sobre la seguridad al usar la presa de grabado. Nuestra instructora volvera a hablar de la seguridad cuando vayamos a usar la prensa.
En la segunda parte de la clase, finalmente nos pusimos manos a la obra con la placa de linóleo y las gubias. Hicimos marcas en la placa de linóleo usando las gubias. Se necesita práctica y paciencia. Trazamos una cuadrícula en la placa y dibujamos líneas (como las líneas que hicimos en la primera sesión). Luego empezamos a tallar. Lo hicimos muy bien.
Michelle también nos dijo que si utilizamos un “Bench Hook”, es más fácil sostener la placa. Teníamos solo dos, así que compartimos.
