Create your Urban Garden
Axel and met the Mujeres en Movimiento Collective and learned about their love of gardening and knowledge about ancestral plant remedies, while we all learned how to make tissue paper flowers for Dia de los Muertos. Valeria told stories about plants and remedies and her life.
That inspired them to create a portable Urban garden. In the workshop, we introduced ourselves and talked about our favorite plants. Then we talked about the value of planting our food and making our home remedies. We were introduced to hydroponic gardening using clay marbles or coconut fiber as a substrate. We started creating our planter cutting a plastic bottle, adding a plastic hose across for drainage and watering. And then we connect it to the structure and run the water. It works! What a fun and useful workshop!
George said he will do a garden on top of his fish tank.
This workshop is part of the partnership that NNY has with Columbia GSAAP and artist Sol Aramendi to create work inspired in the immigrant community of Queens. We will have our end of the project celebration on December 16.
